TLDR Human hair follicle stem cells can grow and turn into skin cells on chitosan templates, which may help in regenerative medicine.
The study "Proliferation and Differentiation of Human Hair Follicle Stem Cells on Chitosan-Skin Engineered Template in Vitro" from 2017 investigated the potential of chitosan skin-engineered templates (SETs) as scaffolds for the growth of hair follicle stem cells (HFSCs). The researchers isolated HFSCs from human scalp tissues and propagated them in a specific medium. The attachment and proliferation of these cells on the chitosan SETs were evaluated using various methods, including scanning electron microscopy and live/dead assays. The researchers then differentiated the HFSCs using a different medium and confirmed their differentiation using specific markers. The results showed that HFSCs could successfully attach, proliferate, and differentiate into keratinocytes on chitosan SETs, suggesting potential applications in regenerative medicine.
