TLDR A method was created in 2005 to identify minoxidil, a hair growth ingredient, in products using two types of capillary zone electrophoresis, and it found that most products had about 2% minoxidil.
In 2005, a procedure was developed and validated for determining the presence of minoxidil in hair-regrowth formulations using two variants of capillary zone electrophoresis. The method was primarily used to analyze illicit minoxidil-containing hair-regrowth samples and was validated on two instruments, one using electrokinetic injection and the other gravity injection. The procedure was selective for minoxidil, separating it from known process impurities and the single degradation impurity, desoxyminoxidil. The study found that lithium was a better electrophoretic match to minoxidil compared to sodium and potassium, and that minoxidil concentration in most examined products was about 2% (w/v). The method was used as a complementary technique to High-Performance Liquid Chromatography (HPLC) for confirming the presence of minoxidil in these products.
