research Facial Skull Injuries in the Clinical Material of the Cranio-Maxillofacial Surgery Clinic in Katowice

      January 2024 in “Wiadomości Lekarskie”
The document discusses facial skull injuries resulting from various accidents and their complex treatment challenges. It emphasizes the importance of interdisciplinary treatment involving surgeons and physiotherapists to manage these injuries effectively. The study is based on a retrospective analysis of cases treated in an emergency setting at a maxillofacial surgery department. It details the mechanisms of injury, surgical methods for soft tissue and bone repair, and the critical role of post-traumatic rehabilitation. The results indicate satisfactory outcomes, highlighting that interdisciplinary therapy is crucial for minimizing complications and achieving optimal recovery, including restoring function, aesthetics, physical ability, and full activity.

research Analysis of Thyroid Disease Prevalence in a Random Sample Using Ultrasound

      January 2024 in “Wiadomości Lekarskie”
The study analyzed the prevalence of thyroid disorders using ultrasound examinations in a random sample of 23 individuals. Pathological changes in the thyroid were found in 95.65% of participants, with only 4.35% showing age-appropriate norms. The most common disorders identified were chronic autoimmune thyroiditis (Hashimoto's disease) in 30.43% of cases, followed by nodular goiter and other thyroid abnormalities. The majority of participants were adults aged 21-55 years, and women constituted 95.65% of the sample. The findings confirm the frequent occurrence of thyroid diseases, particularly autoimmune processes, in the studied population.

research New Strategy for Treating Partial Deafness: Surgical and Pharmacological Perspectives on Hearing Loss Treatment

      January 2024 in “Wiadomości Lekarskie”
This study from the Światowe Centrum Słuchu in Warsaw evaluated the impact of steroid treatment on hearing preservation in 147 adult patients undergoing cochlear implantation. Patients were divided into three groups based on the type of cochlear implant and further into subgroups based on steroid administration: intravenous dexamethasone, combined intravenous and oral steroids, and a control group without steroids. Hearing preservation (HP) was assessed using pure-tone audiometry before implantation, at processor activation, and 12 months post-activation. Results showed that steroid-treated groups had higher rates of partial or complete HP (62%) compared to the control group (33%). The study concluded that steroid pharmacotherapy, combined with the six-step Skarżyński surgical method and appropriate cochlear implant systems, effectively preserves residual hearing in patients undergoing cochlear implantation.
