TLDR Using superficial temporal fascia helps prevent Frey syndrome after parotid surgery.
This retrospective study evaluated the efficacy of using superficial temporal fascia (STF) as an interpositioning barrier to prevent Frey syndrome (FS) after superficial parotidectomy. The study included 48 patients divided into two groups: 25 patients with STF interpositioning (group I) and 23 without (group II). Results showed that only 4% of group I developed mild FS compared to 39.1% in group II, indicating a significant reduction in FS incidence with STF interpositioning. No cases of permanent facial palsy were observed, and alopecia along the incision line was imperceptible in group I. The study concluded that STF interpositioning is a safe and effective method for preventing FS post-surgery.
