TLDR Atropine and neosynephrine effectively prevent floppy iris syndrome during cataract surgery.
The study investigated the preventive effects of preoperative atropine and phenylephrine eye drops on floppy iris syndrome during age-related cataract surgery in high-risk patients. A retrospective analysis was conducted on 596 cases (641 eyes) of cataract surgery performed from January 2012 to December 2013. In 2013, 52 eyes of patients with benign prostatic hyperplasia taking tamsulosin or finasteride received the eye drops before surgery. The incidence of floppy iris syndrome was significantly reduced from 2.95% (10 eyes) in 2012 to 0.66% (2 eyes) in 2013, indicating that the preoperative use of these eye drops had a preventive effect on the syndrome during surgery.
