TLDR Topical corticosteroids are the best initial treatment for children with Alopecia Areata.
In a systematic review conducted in October 2019, 122 reports involving 1,032 pediatric patients with Alopecia Areata (AA) were analyzed to evaluate the evidence of current treatment modalities for this condition in children. The reports included 2 randomized controlled trials, 4 prospective comparative cohorts, 83 case series, 2 case-control studies, and 31 case reports, assessing various treatments such as corticosteroids, contact immunotherapies, and Janus kinase inhibitors. The review concluded that topical corticosteroids are the preferred first-line treatment for pediatric AA due to the highest level of evidence, followed by contact immunotherapy. However, the review highlighted the need for more clinical trials and comparative studies to better guide the management of pediatric AA and to explore the use of both low-cost and novel therapies.
