TLDR Premature greying in kids can signal health issues like vitamin deficiencies or thyroid problems, which can be treated.
Premature greying of hair in children, known as canities, is becoming a notable concern for parents and pediatricians. While often harmless, it can indicate underlying issues such as nutritional deficiencies, autoimmune disorders, genetic factors, endocrine problems, or oxidative stress. The lack of standardized guidelines in pediatrics can lead to misdiagnosis and missed treatment opportunities. This review highlights the importance of identifying and treating reversible causes like deficiencies in vitamin B12, iron, vitamin D, zinc, and hypothyroidism, which can stop or reverse greying in many cases. It offers an evidence-based approach for healthcare professionals to manage this condition effectively.
