TLDR Clinicians should look for skin issues, sleep problems, cognitive changes, and food cravings as signs of insulin resistance.
The study examined insulin resistance among 241 male medical students in Saudi Arabia, finding that waist circumference was significantly correlated with skin tags and acanthosis nigricans, but not with psoriasis, hidradenitis suppurativa, androgenic alopecia, alopecia areata, or vitiligo. Acne was the most common symptom across all waist circumference groups. Additionally, many students experienced excessive daytime sleepiness, cognitive difficulties, and persistent hunger and thirst. The findings suggest that clinicians should consider dermatological symptoms, sleep issues, cognitive changes, and food cravings as potential indicators of insulin resistance and related conditions like diabetes and prediabetes.
