TLDR COVID-19 may cause temporary hair loss, which usually gets better on its own, but reducing stress and managing health issues might help recovery.
The review discusses the increase in cases of acute telogen effluvium (ATE), a form of hair loss, during the COVID-19 pandemic. The exact mechanisms by which the SARS-CoV-2 virus causes hair loss are not fully understood, but it's likely due to an excessive release of proinflammatory cytokines during infection, which can damage hair matrix cells. The psychosocial condition of patients recovering from COVID-19 may also contribute to hair loss. Based on current data, post-COVID telogen effluvium is expected to improve without treatment. However, eliminating psychophysical stress, managing systemic complications, and explaining the course of the condition to the patient could potentially speed up the hair recovery process.
