TLDR A young woman got liver damage from taking too much vitamin A for two years.
A young woman developed liver cirrhosis with portal hypertension after consuming an over-the-counter vitamin A supplement significantly above the recommended daily dose for 2 years. She experienced symptoms including arthralgia, skin itching, hyperemia, skin exfoliation, hair loss, and cracks in the corners of her mouth and earlobes. Other liver diseases were ruled out, and a liver biopsy confirmed hypervitaminosis A without fibrosis. Her symptoms regressed completely within 8 months after stopping the supplement. This case highlights the potential for serious liver injury from chronic vitamin A toxicity and underscores the importance of prescribing vitamin A only for medical reasons, for a limited time, and under medical supervision.
