Application of Platelet-Rich Gel in Repairing Scalp Defects Combined with Skull Exposure: A Case Series Analysis

TLDR Platelet-rich gel is an effective treatment for healing scalp wounds with exposed skull.

The study assessed the use of platelet-rich gel (PRG) in 12 patients with scalp defects and skull exposure, finding it to be an effective non-surgical treatment option. The average wound area was 17.08 cm², and patients experienced complete healing within an average of 25.0 days and 8.3 dressing changes. PRG preparation was simpler and faster than other methods, with a platelet concentration 2.4 times that of blood. There were no significant differences in pain, inflammatory markers, or skin temperature post-treatment, and minimal local scars and sparse hair growth were observed at follow-up. Despite the small sample size and lack of control groups, the study suggests PRG as a beneficial treatment for scalp defects, necessitating further research for optimization and comparison with other treatments. The study was supported by the Chongqing Science and Health joint project, with data available within the article.
