Platelet Concentrate and Tissue Regeneration: Does It Work? A Pre-Clinical Study

    This pre-clinical study investigated the effects of platelet concentrates, specifically Plasma Rich in Growth Factors (PRGF), on tissue regeneration. The study involved human adipose-derived stem cells, human osteoblasts, and human dermal fibroblasts cultured with PRGF, which replaced fetal bovine serum to avoid immunogenic risks. PRGF enhanced cell proliferation and osteo-differentiation without affecting cell viability. Additionally, a preclinical animal model using six New Zealand rabbits with bone defects showed that PRGF combined with a bone graft substitute slightly increased new bone formation, although the difference was not statistically significant. The study concluded that platelet concentrates have beneficial effects on both soft and hard tissue regeneration, supporting their use in clinical regenerative therapies.
