TLDR Photobiomodulation helps reduce pain, lessen inflammation, heal wounds, and can be used in skin treatments. It also boosts hair growth in women with hair loss and may help fight microbes and prevent respiratory issues in COVID-19.
The review paper "Photobiomodulation in Cells' Repair" from July 2020 analyzed 80 publications and found photobiomodulation to be effective in pain reduction, inflammation mitigation, and wound healing stimulation. It was also useful in dermatological or aesthetic medicine practices. The study highlighted the role of cytochrome-c-oxidase as a photo-acceptor and the importance of interfacial water layers in adenosine-triphosphate upregulation. The review concluded that photobiomodulation is a promising field with potential for standardized evaluation methods and outcome optimization. In hair growth research, a double-blinded randomized controlled trial involving 47 females with androgenic alopecia showed a significant increase in hair count and overall hair growth in the treatment group. The document also discussed the potential benefits of photobiomodulation in the context of antimicrobial activity and the prevention of respiratory complications in the COVID-19 pandemic.
