TLDR Topical calcitriol is safe for preventing hair loss during chemotherapy.
The study investigated the safety of topical calcitriol (BPM 31543) for preventing chemotherapy-induced alopecia (CIA) in up to 31 women with breast cancer, gynecologic cancer, and sarcomas. Participants applied the treatment twice daily before and during taxane-based chemotherapy. Out of 28 enrolled patients, 21 were evaluable, and the study found that the treatment was safe and well-tolerated, with no severe adverse events or dose-limiting toxicities. Mild to moderate side effects included scalp pain and elevated vitamin D levels. A clinical response indicating potential efficacy was observed at all dose levels, but the maximum tolerated dose was not identified.
