TLDR PCOS treatment should be personalized, using birth control pills or metformin for symptoms, with lifestyle changes being essential.
Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) is a common endocrine disorder in women, often undiagnosed, and linked to increased risks of type 2 diabetes and cardiovascular disease. Pharmacological management should be tailored to individual patient concerns. The combined oral contraceptive pill or metformin can be used for irregular periods, with the pill also preferred for treating hirsutism and acne. Metformin is beneficial for weight reduction and improving hormonal and metabolic outcomes, especially in patients with a BMI over 25 kg/m². Inositol offers limited metabolic benefits but has fewer side effects than metformin. Lifestyle modifications are crucial in a holistic management approach, and anti-obesity drugs may be used alongside lifestyle changes for weight management.
