TLDR Inflammation around hair follicles may worsen hair loss; evaluating and treating it can improve transplant results.
The study evaluated perifollicular inflammation in the donor area during hair transplantation in androgenetic alopecia (AGA) patients and compared it with controls. The results showed that moderate to dense perifollicular inflammation around the lower infundibulum and isthmus may be responsible for the progression of AGA. The study recommends histopathological evaluation of the donor strip in all cases of hair transplant to evaluate the extent of perifollicular inflammation and achieve better results by following it up with treatment directed to decrease the inflammation. The study also suggests further studies to find the efficacy of immunosuppressive therapies in AGA cases with significant perifollicular inflammation.
