TLDR During the COVID-19 pandemic in China, skin conditions like eczema and warts increased among children, while respiratory-transmitted skin infections decreased, partly due to mask-wearing.
The retrospective study analyzed the changes in pediatric dermatological disorders before and during the COVID-19 pandemic in China, involving 449,032 patients, including 323,142 newly diagnosed ones. The study found that Atopic Dermatitis (AD) and other types of dermatitis were the main diseases during the pandemic, followed by infectious skin diseases, urticaria, erythema, and drug responsive skin diseases. The proportion of patients with molluscum contagiosum, verruca vulgaris, and vitiligo increased during the pandemic, while the proportion of infectious skin diseases transmitted by the respiratory tract decreased significantly due to mask-wearing. The study also highlighted the effective use of pediatric telemedicine during the pandemic to increase timely access and improve practical efficiency.
