Polycystic Ovary Syndrome in Ayurvedic Perspective: Interpreting an Unmentioned Disease through Trividha Bodhya Sangraha

    Ron T. Varghese, Nagaraj Samaga
TLDR PCOS is viewed as a kapha-related disorder in Ayurveda, involving fat tissue issues and channel blockages.
This review explores Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS) through an Ayurvedic perspective, interpreting it as an anukta vyadhi, a condition not explicitly mentioned in Ayurvedic texts. Using the framework of Trividha Bodhya Sangraha from Charaka Samhita, the study attempts to establish PCOS within the Ayurvedic framework through nidana panchaka, the five diagnostic principles. The analysis identifies PCOS as a kapha-predominant disorder characterized by medoduṣhṭi (vitiation of fat tissue), a feeble state of rasa dhatvagni (metabolic transformation at the level of rasa), and margavaraṇa (channel obstruction). The etiopathogenesis is seen as a unique variant of sthoulya samprapti, manifesting in women of reproductive age. This approach also offers a model for evaluating other emerging or unnamed disorders in contemporary practice.
