TLDR PCOS is a hormonal disorder causing symptoms like irregular periods and acne, and increases the risk of diabetes and heart disease.
Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS) affects 6-15% of the female population and is characterized by hormonal imbalances and metabolic issues, leading to symptoms like irregular menstrual cycles and acne, with increased risks of type 2 diabetes and cardiovascular disease. The disorder's etiology includes insulin resistance, hormonal imbalances, genetic factors, and environmental influences. PCOS presents with hyperandrogenism, anovulation, and metabolic disturbances, potentially causing infertility and menstrual disorders. Diagnosis is based on symptoms such as chronic anovulation and hyperandrogenism, with management involving lifestyle changes and medications like clomiphene citrate, metformin, and laparoscopic ovarian drilling to address specific symptoms. Despite the complexity of PCOS and its varied presentations, the underlying defect is not fully understood, and treatments are symptom-targeted.
