TLDR PCOS is a complex disorder needing lifestyle changes, support, and treatment, with new herbal treatments showing promise.
Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) is a complex endocrine disorder affecting over 116 million women worldwide, characterized by symptoms such as ovarian cysts, anovulation, and hyperandrogenism, which can lead to acne, hirsutism, infertility, and alopecia. Oxidative stress is a significant factor in PCOS, interacting with insulin resistance, hyperandrogenemia, and chronic inflammation. Effective management of PCOS involves lifestyle changes, psychological support, and medical treatment, with a focus on preventing long-term metabolic issues. Phytoestrogen-rich herbal extracts show promise in reducing hyperandrogenism and insulin resistance while promoting ovulation, suggesting potential for new treatments. Comprehensive guidelines are needed for early diagnosis and management of PCOS.
