Study of the Prevalence of Different Causes of Hair Loss Among Females With Polycystic Ovary Syndrome in Delta Area, Egypt

TLDR Androgenetic alopecia is the most common hair loss in females with PCOS in Egypt.
This study assessed the prevalence of different causes of hair loss among 246 females with polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) in the Delta area of Egypt. The results showed that androgenetic alopecia (AGA) is the most common form of hair loss in these patients and is strongly associated with PCOS. AGA is linked to other clinical signs of hyperandrogenism, such as hirsutism and acne vulgaris, but does not increase the risk of biochemical changes beyond those associated with PCOS alone. The study found significant associations between AGA and factors like menstrual irregularities, puberty onset, and family history, while no significant associations were found with acne vulgaris, seborrhea, or other physical traits, except for hirsutism being more common in telogen effluvium and psychological disturbances in trichotillomania.
