TLDR The HAIR-Q is a reliable tool for assessing patient satisfaction with hair loss treatments.
The study developed and validated the HAIR-Q, a patient-reported outcome measure for assessing satisfaction with hair appearance in individuals experiencing hair loss. Involving 390 participants from Canada and the USA, the research used qualitative interviews and surveys to identify key hair-related concepts. The HAIR-Q was refined through feedback from patients and experts, resulting in a reliable 14-item scale with high internal consistency (Cronbach alpha 0.94) and minimal differential item functioning. The HAIR-Q is applicable across various hair loss conditions and demographics, providing a comprehensive tool for clinical and research settings to evaluate patient satisfaction and treatment outcomes. Further research is suggested to explore additional psychometric properties.
