TLDR Low zinc levels may contribute to hair loss due to increased oxidative DNA damage.
The case-control study conducted in Duhok city, Kurdistan Region-Iraq, involved 70 participants with hair loss and 50 healthy controls. It investigated the relationship between oxidative DNA damage, zinc status, and hair loss. The study found that oxidative stress, leading to DNA damage and premature cell death, plays a significant role in hair loss. Zinc, an essential trace element, acts as an antioxidant against oxidative stress and is involved in DNA repair mechanisms. The study suggests that zinc deficiency may contribute to hair loss, but further research is needed to confirm this.
