TLDR Follicular unit extraction is a hair transplant method that can leave small scars and uses various tools for harvesting hair from different body parts.
Follicular unit extraction (FUE), also known as follicular unit excision, is a method of harvesting hair follicles from a donor area, typically the occipital scalp area, for implantation in a recipient area. Other nonscalp donor areas like the beard, chest, and other hairy body parts can also be used. The extraction process leaves a small circular scar on the donor area. Over the past 20 years, a variety of devices for FUE have been developed, ranging from manual to highly advanced motors with rotation, oscillation, and vibration. Different types of punch tools are used, including dull, sharp, ultrasharp, serrated, hybrid and specially designed punch blades for long hair follicles harvesting in various diameters from 0.7 mm to 1.1 mm. The follicles can be harvested either manually or by a motorized method.

The conversation is about the progress of verteporfin in hair loss trials, with users expressing curiosity about its effectiveness and updates. Specific treatments mentioned include FUE (Follicular Unit Extraction) combined with verteporfin, with one reported case of donor area regrowth after a year, and three patients being monitored post-treatment by Dr. Bloxham with monthly updates on YouTube.

      community Verteporfin and Microneedling

Clinical studies by Dr. Barghouthi and Dr. Bloxham indicate that Verteporfin, when used with FUE and FUT hair transplantation methods, shows promise in hair follicle regeneration and minimal scarring due to its ability to inhibit Yes-associated protein (YAP). Microneedling at depths of 3-3.5mm, combined with Verteporfin, could potentially reactivate dormant follicles, although the optimal dosage and application method are still under investigation. Concerns remain about the DHT sensitivity of regenerated follicles, highlighting the need for further research to optimize trauma levels and Verteporfin concentrations to achieve effective and scar-free hair regeneration.
