New to Minoxidil? There is a guide in the encyclopedia. Read the guide → Studysummary This study suggests that minoxidil sulfate and pinacidil do not activate K channel currents in hair follicles, indicating their hair growth effects may occur through other mechanisms like increased blood flow. Our plain-language summary of this paper — not a Tressless recommendation.
The study investigated the effects of minoxidil sulfate and pinacidil, known K channel openers, on hair follicle cells, specifically outer root sheath cells and dermal papilla cells. Using patch clamp techniques and 86Rb efflux studies, researchers found that these cells exhibited two types of Ca(2+)-activated K channels with specific conductances. However, neither minoxidil sulfate nor pinacidil activated these K channels or increased 86Rb efflux, suggesting that their hair growth-promoting effects might be due to mechanisms other than direct K channel activation, such as increased blood flow.
