TLDR Alopecia areata patients have higher osteopontin levels and more eye changes, but their vision remains unaffected.
This study investigated the serum level of osteopontin (OPN) in 40 patients with alopecia areata (AA) and its correlation with ocular changes, compared to 40 healthy controls. Results showed a significant increase in serum OPN levels in AA patients, with a positive correlation between OPN levels and disease duration. No correlation was found between OPN levels and age or severity of alopecia. Patients exhibited more significant eye manifestations, including higher mean break-up time, lens abnormalities, and fundus abnormalities, compared to controls. Despite these findings, visual acuity was not affected in AA patients.
