Studies on the Nutritional Value and Anti-Tumor Property of the Bark of Spondias Mombin L.
February 2002
TLDR Spondias mombin bark may help treat certain cancers but can cause side effects like increased heart rate.
The study investigated the anti-tumor properties of the bark of Spondias mombin using 40 Wistar rats. The rats were divided into groups, with some receiving a carcinogenic diet and others receiving S. mombin bark at various concentrations. The group treated with S. mombin after initial carcinogen exposure showed significant improvement, with reduced symptoms such as hair loss and hyperplastic nodules. However, increased dosage of S. mombin was associated with tachycardia. Histopathological analysis revealed significant differences in liver, small intestine, and kidney tissues. The bark was found to be high in crude fiber and calcium, which may contribute to its anti-tumor effects, suggesting its potential role in treating certain malignancies.
