TLDR Nitroglycerin ointment is now used to treat several skin conditions with fewer side effects.
Nitroglycerin, known for its vasodilatory effects, has been used in medicine for cardiovascular conditions for over 130 years. Recently, its incorporation into various topical formulations has expanded its therapeutic applications in dermatology and surgery. Conditions such as Raynaud syndrome, chondrodermatitis, pernio erythema, alopecia areata, and various ulcers have been treated with nitroglycerin ointments at concentrations of 0.5%, 1%, or 2%. These lower concentrations are chosen to reduce the likelihood of systemic side effects.
