TLDR Black cumin and its nanoformulations show promise in treating neurodegenerative diseases.
The review explores the potential of Nigella sativa, particularly its component thymoquinone (TQ), in managing neurodegenerative disorders (NDs) through nanoformulations. These nanoformulations improve drug delivery to the central nervous system by overcoming the blood-brain barrier, targeting specific brain areas, and reducing off-target effects and toxicity. Nigella sativa exhibits neuroprotective properties through antioxidant and anti-inflammatory effects, and studies show it can improve cognitive functions and reduce neuroinflammation in animal models. The review emphasizes the promise of nanotechnology in enhancing the bioavailability and efficacy of these compounds, suggesting significant therapeutic potential with fewer side effects for conditions like Alzheimer's and Parkinson's diseases. Further research is needed to develop effective natural nanoformulations.
