TLDR Black cumin and its nanoformulations show promise in treating neurodegenerative diseases.
Nigella sativa, commonly known as black seed or black cumin, has been historically used for its medicinal properties, including treating ailments like hair loss and gastrointestinal issues. A key component, thymoquinone (TQ), has shown therapeutic potential for various diseases, including neurodegenerative disorders (NDs). Recent studies highlight the promising outcomes of using nanoformulations of Nigella sativa and TQ for treating NDs. These nanoformulations enhance drug delivery to the central nervous system (CNS) by targeting specific locations and reducing accumulation in undesirable organs. The review compiles In vivo, In vitro, and In silico studies demonstrating the neuroprotective effects of black cumin and its potential in managing neurodegenerative diseases.
