TLDR Higher levels of certain nerve-related proteins are linked to hair loss in women with scalp pain.
The study titled "Increased expression of nerve growth factor and neurokinin-1 alarm the hair loss in female with trichodynia" investigated the relationship between hair loss and trichodynia by examining the expression of inflammatory and nociceptive mediators in 45 female pattern hair loss (FPHL) Korean patients aged 26-55 years. Tissue specimens were obtained from the hair loss area and mRNA expressions of various mediators were determined. The results showed a significant increase in the mRNA expression of nerve growth factor (NGF) and neurokinin-1 (NK-1) (P < .1), as well as higher levels of TGF beta1 and IL-6 compared to controls. The study concluded that NGF and NK-1 are closely related to trichodynia with hair loss in females, suggesting their involvement in hair loss through nociceptive mediators, although the condition's association with hair loss remains controversial.
