TLDR Poliglecaprone 25 is better than steel staples for hair transplant surgery, causing less discomfort and finer scars.
In a study from 2001 involving 22 patients, poliglecaprone 25, a synthetic absorbable suture, was found to be superior to stainless steel staples for donor wound closure in hair transplantation. Patients reported fewer postoperative complaints such as itching and swelling with the suture, and objective measurements showed a narrower average scar width of 1.42 mm with the suture compared to 1.78 mm with staples. Fourteen patients preferred the suture for future procedures, indicating a preference for the comfort and minimal risk of infection it provided. The study concluded that poliglecaprone 25 results in a fine surgical scar and a more comfortable postoperative experience. Ronald D. Shiell, MD, the author, recommends poliglecaprone 25 for its ease of use and post-operative comfort, having used it exclusively in his practice for hair transplantation and other dermatologic surgeries.
