TLDR Laser hair removal is safe and effective for fair-skinned people with dark hair, and using eflornithine with laser treatments can improve results.
In 2006, a review article discussed the condition of hirsutism and its treatment options, including the psychological impact of hair disorders, the role of hormones and 5α-reductase in hair growth, and the use of inhibitors like finasteride. The article highlighted laser hair removal, particularly the efficacy of alexandrite and diode lasers, with a study involving 75 patients showing 65.6% hair reduction for alexandrite and 46.9% for diode lasers. It also addressed the challenges of treating darker skin and the effectiveness of Nd:YAG laser for pseudofolliculitis barbae in a study with 26 patients. Non-pigmented hair removal techniques and the use of eflornithine to slow hair growth were discussed, with a study of 40 patients showing a 90% reduction in hair growth with melanin encapsulated liposomes. The document concluded that laser hair removal is safe and effective, especially for fair-skinned patients with dark hair, and that eflornithine can enhance results when used with laser treatments. Additional studies involving 532 sites in 389 patients and an 18-month follow-up on combined radiofrequency and optical energy treatments were cited, providing evidence for the long-term outcomes and safety of hair removal technologies.
