TLDR Natural ingredients like plant extracts and marine life show promise for improving scalp health and reducing hair loss.
In 2020, a review was conducted to provide data on natural substances used in scalp improvement cosmetics. The study found that extracts from various plants and marine life had beneficial effects on the scalp and hair growth. Lespedeza cuneate extract decreased scalp dead skin cells, microorganisms, and erythema, and improved pustular acne. Centella asiatica extract controlled the expression of IL-1β and improved scalp erythema. Arctium lappa L. root extract decreased scalp bacteria and sebum, increased moisture, and made red spots clearer. Rooibos extract improved the water-oil balance of seborrheic scalp and reduced itching and redness. Pussy willow stem's ethanol extract had antioxidant and anti-inflammatory effects, protected HaCaT cells, and increased dermal cells. Astringent persimmon extract increased hair length/density and hair follicle cells. Hibiscus extract improved pores and scalp condition, and decreased exposure of scalp's blood vessels, sebum, and dead skin cells. Stichopus japonicus extract improved scalp tone and pores, increased hair density and thickness, and reduced sebum. Blue shark fin extract (SUC ATCoL SS) reduced hair loss, improved scalp condition, and increased hair density and thickness. Microalgae SO and CG had antioxidant effects, induced cell proliferation, and inhibited 5-alpha reductase activity. The review concluded that more in-depth studies should be conducted on natural substances effective in improving the scalp.
