TLDR New imaging techniques can assess and track changes in mouse acne without harm, aiding treatment choices.
This study used a mouse acne model to dynamically evaluate pathological changes with nondestructive optical imaging techniques. It found that Propionibacterium acnes colonization peaked on day 1 and decreased by day 7, with inflammation subsiding as bacteria were engulfed. The model showed significant epidermal thickening, abnormal follicular keratosis, and sebaceous gland hyperplasia. Inflammation was characterized by acute responses and abscess formation, with skin morphology returning to normal by day 13. The study demonstrated the effectiveness of optical imaging in monitoring acne pathology and evaluating anti-acne treatments, highlighting the importance of inflammation in acne development and reducing the number of animals required for research.

Scalp biopsies are crucial for diagnosing hair loss conditions like Diffuse Unpatterned Alopecia (DUPA) and retrograde hair loss, as treatments like finasteride and dutasteride may not be effective if other conditions are present. Combining PPAR-GAMMA agonists with retinoids could improve treatments for conditions like Lichen Planopilaris.

Dihydrotestosterone (DHT) impacts various skin conditions, including Androgenetic alopecia and seborrheic dermatitis, by causing overactivity in sebaceous glands. Topical medications Tacrolimus and Clobetasol can reduce these inflammatory conditions, and treatments like RU58841, Minoxidil, and Finasteride may also be beneficial.
