TLDR A 2% climbazole shampoo effectively reduces fungal growth on dog hair, and using a physiological shampoo afterward may boost this effect.
The study assessed the residual antifungal activity of a 2% climbazole shampoo on dog hair using a modified hair strand test. Six beagles were bathed with the shampoo, and hair samples were collected over 30 days. Results showed significantly larger inhibition zones around hairs treated with the climbazole shampoo compared to untreated hairs at all time points (P = 0.003). Additionally, applying a physiological shampoo on Day 30 increased the inhibition zones (P = 0.005). The study concluded that the modified hair strand test is effective for evaluating residual antifungal activity and that using a physiological shampoo after antifungal treatment may enhance the control of Malassezia overgrowth.
