TLDR Biogenic surfactants should be explored as safer alternatives in dermatological products.
The study investigated the use of emulsifiers and preservatives in modern dermatological emulsion-type medications, focusing on those with a high water phase content, such as topical creams. It highlighted the potential side effects of synthetic surfactants, which can remove protective skin oils and act as allergens. The research suggested that biogenic surfactants could be promising alternatives due to their emulsifying and preserving capabilities. The study found that polysorbates were commonly used as first-type emulsifiers, while cetostearyl alcohol and lanolin were used as second-type emulsifiers in registered Ukrainian emulsion medications. The conclusion emphasized the importance of exploring biogenic surfactants to expand the range of auxiliary substances in pharmaceutical and cosmetic emulsions.
