TLDR Millets support sustainable development by improving nutrition, aiding climate resilience, and boosting economic viability, especially for Indian farmers.
The systematic review underscores the vital role of millets in advancing the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals by enhancing environmental sustainability, nutritional security, and economic viability, especially for Indian farmers. Millets' drought resistance and low water needs make them ideal for sustainable agriculture, aiding in climate change mitigation. Rich in essential nutrients, they benefit health, particularly for those with diabetes and celiac disease, and help address micronutrient deficiencies and malnutrition. Despite declining consumption, government initiatives have boosted demand. The review calls for integrating millets into mainstream food systems to support small-scale farmers and improve food security, highlighting the need for research, awareness, and policy support to promote millet cultivation and consumption globally.
