TLDR Hair-derived material is safe and effective for skin filling.
The study aimed to evaluate the microstructure and intracutaneous filling effect of a new soft tissue filling agent derived from hair. After preparing the injectable material from 20 g of bleached black hair, it was tested on two 3-month-old pigs. The material was injected into the left abdominal region, with the right region serving as a control. Over 24 weeks, the hair keratin was mostly absorbed and replaced by autologous fibroblasts and collagen, with no adverse reactions observed. The experimental sites showed significantly thicker adjacent dermis compared to control sites at 12 and 24 weeks (P<0.05). The study concluded that the hair-derived material had good biocompatibility and could promote dermal filling and replacement, suggesting its potential as a new soft tissue filling agent.
