TLDR Antiandrogen treatment helps reduce hair follicles and sebaceous glands in hirsute women.
The study analyzed the effects of Cyproterone acetate (CPA) on pilo-sebaceous units in 14 hirsute women over 12 months. Biopsies showed an increased number of hair follicles and sebaceous gland hyperplasia before treatment. Post-treatment, 64.2% of cases exhibited atrophy of pilo-sebaceous units, with noticeable inflammatory infiltrate and basal layer vacuoles. Six cases showed marked hyperplasia of Langerhans cells. The findings suggested that antiandrogen treatment led to hair follicle and sebaceous gland atrophy, with Langerhans cell activation and inflammation as local consequences of hair follicle involution.
