TLDR Many healthy adults in Pakistan have Metabolic Syndrome, with key risks being high triglycerides, low HDL cholesterol, and belly fat.
The systematic review and meta-analysis investigated the prevalence of metabolic syndrome (MetS) among 30,419 apparently healthy adults in Pakistan, revealing an overall prevalence of 28.8%. The study found significant regional variations, with the highest prevalence in Sindh and Punjab provinces. Key risk factors identified included central obesity, low HDL, and high triglycerides. The study emphasized the need for national policies and comprehensive healthcare strategies to address the increasing burden of MetS, highlighting the importance of addressing lifestyle factors, especially in urbanized and industrialized areas. Despite variations in diagnostic criteria, the findings underscored the need for population-level screening to manage this public health issue.
