TLDR Ongoing follow-up and dietary counseling are crucial for maintaining health benefits after metabolic surgery.
The study in North-Eastern Romania involved 50 patients undergoing metabolic surgery, focusing on weight loss, body composition, and metabolic health over a year. Patients, primarily women with an average age of 37, underwent either longitudinal gastrectomy or Roux-en-Y gastric bypass. Significant weight loss was observed, with gastrectomy patients losing an average of 12.6 kg and bypass patients 10.86 kg one month post-surgery, and further weight loss at six months. Improvements in body composition included decreased adipose and visceral fat and increased muscle mass. HbA1c levels improved significantly, indicating better glycemic control. The study emphasizes the importance of ongoing follow-up and dietary counseling to maintain these health benefits, despite challenges like low patient adherence to follow-up care.
