TLDR Men who strongly follow traditional masculinity are more likely to have cosmetic surgery to feel powerful and successful.
A study involving 241 self-identifying men from the German-speaking part of Europe found that 19.5% had undergone cosmetic surgery, with wrinkle treatment, eyelid correction, and head-hair transplants being the most common procedures. The primary motivations were to feel better (72.3%) and look better (55.3%). The study revealed a significant positive association between conformity to traditional masculinity ideologies (TMI) and the likelihood of undergoing cosmetic surgery, particularly head-hair transplants. An increase in conformity to TMI increased the odds of having cosmetic surgery by a factor of 2.29 and head-hair transplants by 3.84, suggesting that men use cosmetic surgery to assert power, success, dominance, and sexual success.
