TLDR Melatonin helps Cashmere goats grow more hair by affecting genes and cell signals important for hair and blood vessel development.
In 2018, a study was conducted to understand the role of melatonin in promoting the growth of secondary hair follicles in Cashmere goats. The researchers established an in vitro Cashmere goat secondary hair follicle culture system and found that exposure to 500 ng/L melatonin promoted hair follicle fiber growth. The study revealed that melatonin promoted hair follicle elongation by regulating genes involved in focal adhesion and extracellular matrix receptor pathways. Additionally, it was found that melatonin mediated long non-coding RNAs (lncRNAs) mainly targeted vascular smooth muscle contraction and signaling pathways regulating the pluripotency of stem cells. The researchers concluded that melatonin not only regulated hair follicle development by affecting key signals secreted from hair follicle stem cells, but also targeted pathways involved in the microvascular system and extracellular matrix, which are crucial for the microenvironment of hair follicle stem cells.
