TLDR Monnina crassifolia, Aloe vera, and rosemary are commonly used for hair conditions in Angochagua, Ecuador.
In Ecuador, alopecia and hair diseases were the second most common hair-related conditions. This study aimed to identify ancestral plants used for treating hair diseases in the rural community of Angochagua, Imbabura Province. It involved 59 adults (22 men, 37 women) aged 15-85 years for men and 21-78 years for women, who had knowledge of medicinal plants. Data were collected through informed consent, interviews, and the U-PlanMed questionnaire. The study found that 80% of the population used medicinal plants for hair conditions, with Monnina crassifolia (Ivilán), Aloe vera (sábila), and Salvia rosmarinus (romero) being the most commonly used.

Scalp biopsies are crucial for diagnosing hair loss conditions like Diffuse Unpatterned Alopecia (DUPA) and retrograde hair loss, as treatments like finasteride and dutasteride may not be effective if other conditions are present. Combining PPAR-GAMMA agonists with retinoids could improve treatments for conditions like Lichen Planopilaris.
