Medical Practice: Therapy and Adverse Reactions

TLDR Blood pressure drugs can cause skin lupus, but it improves after stopping the drug. The glycoprotein D vaccine works against genital herpes in some women, and the HPV-16 vaccine reduces HPV-16 infection and related diseases. More frequent light therapy clears psoriasis faster. A cream called imiquimod effectively treats a type of skin cancer. Iron supplements don't necessarily help with chronic hair loss in women.
In 2003, multiple studies were conducted on various medical conditions and treatments. A study involving 120 patients found that antihypertensive agents were most commonly implicated in drug-induced cutaneous lupus erythematosus (CLE), with most patients seeing improvement within 8 weeks of discontinuing the offending drug. Other studies focused on conditions like steroid-induced hypersensitivity, arsenicosis, diabetic foot ulcers, neonatal herpes simplex virus infection, pediatric vasculitis, localized scleroderma, and varicella. In terms of vaccines, a study of 2714 subjects found the glycoprotein D vaccine effective against genital herpes in certain women, and another study of 2392 women found the HPV-16 vaccine reduced the incidence of HPV-16 infection and related cervical intraepithelial neoplasia. A study on 113 psoriasis patients found that NB-UVB phototherapy three times weekly cleared psoriasis significantly faster than twice-weekly treatment. Other studies on psoriasis and dermatitis investigated sensitizers, monoclonal antibodies, oral pimecrolimus, and the impact of smoking and drinking. Two studies on primary nodular basal cell carcinoma found that 5% imiquimod cream dosed daily resulted in high clearance rates. Lastly, a study of 194 females with chronic diffuse telogen hair loss found no direct relationship between low serum ferritin and hair loss, leaving the role of iron supplementation therapy unclear.
