TLDR Mealworm farming is a sustainable, low-cost way to produce high-quality protein-rich feed.
The document reviewed the production, processing, and uses of mealworms (Tenebrio molitor) as a sustainable source of protein-rich food and feed. Mealworms were highlighted for their ability to convert organic waste into biomass, making them an efficient choice for producing animal, poultry, and fish feed. They were noted for their high nutritional value, containing significant protein (13.68 to 22.32 g per 100 g) and fatty acids (8.90 to 19.94 g per 100 g), as well as being rich in zinc and magnesium. The review concluded that mealworm farming could be a low-cost, environmentally friendly method to produce high-quality feed, supporting rural livelihoods and the poultry and fish feed industries.
