TLDR Age, sex, BMI, menopause, and specific genes affect hair density in East Asians.
The study investigated genetic and environmental factors affecting hair density in 5,735 East Asian individuals, focusing on follicular unit density (FUD) and hairs per follicular unit (HFU). Using trichoscopic images and deep learning analyses, the research identified significant associations of age, sex, body mass index, and menopausal status with hair density. Three genetic loci, rs11940736, rs10908366, and rs3771033, were linked to hair density, with rs3771033 showing a notable correlation with NRP2 expression and FUD. The study also found genetic overlap among hair traits and male pattern baldness (MPB), and allele-specific responses to finasteride treatment for MPB, suggesting potential for personalized hair disorder management.
