TLDR Young women with PCOS without additional risk factors may have normal heart function.
In a study from 2008, researchers assessed left ventricular function in 26 untreated patients with Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS) and compared it to 24 healthy control subjects using conventional echocardiographic methods and tissue Doppler imaging. The study found no significant differences in various echocardiographic measures of cardiac function between the PCOS patients and the control subjects. Despite the association of PCOS with cardiovascular risk factors, the study concluded that young women with PCOS without these risk factors may have normal cardiac function. However, the authors emphasized the importance of managing metabolic disturbances to prevent cardiovascular disease and acknowledged the limitations of the study, such as its small sample size and the need for further research with older subjects and larger sample sizes.
