<i>In Vivo</i> Hair Growth-Promoting Effect of Rice Bran Extract Prepared by Supercritical Carbon Dioxide Fluid

TLDR Rice bran extract can potentially treat hair loss by promoting hair growth and increasing the number of hair follicles.
The study from 10 years ago demonstrated that rice bran supercritical CO₂ extract (RB-SCE) has a hair growth-promoting effect on C57BL/6 mice, comparable to 3% minoxidil. Topical application of RB-SCE for 4 weeks resulted in a significant increase in hair growth index values, induction of hair follicles into the anagen stage, and an increase in the number of hair follicles. The treatment also led to higher mRNA expression levels of growth factors such as VEGF, IGF-1, and KGF, and a decrease in TGF-ß expression. Linoleic acid and γ-oryzanol, components of RB-SCE, were identified as active agents promoting hair follicle formation and growth factor expression. The study concluded that RB-SCE, particularly due to linoleic acid and γ-oryzanol, could be a potential treatment for hair loss.
