TLDR Both surgical hairline advancement and follicular unit transplantation effectively lower the female hairline, but they differ in speed, scarring, and naturalness of results.
In 2013, a study examined two methods for lowering the female hairline: Surgical Hairline Advancement (SHA) and Follicular Unit Transplantation (FUT). Both methods were found to be effective, but each had its own pros and cons. SHA was faster and provided immediate results, but could result in visible scarring. It was particularly beneficial for patients with elastic scalps and could advance the hairline by 1.5cm to 5cm. FUT was more time-consuming and results were not immediate, but it offered a more natural look and less visible scarring. It required adequate donor hair supply and could result in temporary hairline elevation due to shock loss to existing hairs. The choice between the two methods depended on the individual patient's needs, including factors like the stability of the hairline, scalp laxity, and patient goals.
